IEE Wiring Matters | Spring 2005 | www.iee.org Radon – a brief explanation Radon is a naturally occurring gas that has no colour, smell or taste. The gas comes from minute amounts of uranium present in all earth materials such as rocks, soil, bricks and concrete. Radon is present in all parts of the UK, but in the most populous areas the levels are quite low. Some of the highest levels are found in the south west, but levels well above average have been found in some other parts of England and parts of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, even in these areas most homes have low levels. Maps showing the areas of the country affected by radon are available from the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB). However, radon can be found in other areas and, even though levels may be low, isolated high levels can occur. The only way to be sure is to conduct a radon test in the building.

Investigating Indoor Radon Concentration Using CR-39 Detector; a Case Study of Gachin Dwellings in Hormozgan
Introduction: Radon is a colorless inert gas which decay products are the main component of natural radioactive elements that are naturally produced in under layers of earth crust by decay of radium and uranium. It enters through buildings via gaps and cracks. Radon gas decay products like alpha particle can increase the incidence of lung cancer in human. Since every person sp...
متن کاملاندازهگیری غلظت گاز رادون محلول در آبهای زیرزمینی شهرستان زرند و برآورد دوز سالیانه گاز رادون جذب شده در سال 1395
Background and Objectives: Entrance of high concentration of Radon gas through drinking water or inhaling Radon gas released into the air from water can cause lung cancer. This study aimed to measure Radon gas dissolved in groundwater and to determine the annual effective absorbed dose of Radon gas in Zarand city. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was done on 48 randomly selected r...
متن کاملMeasurement of Contemporary and Retrospective Radon Concentration in Ramsar Dwellings Using Polycarbonate Detector
The origins of radon gas are the amount of uranium decay in the soil that is released into space and through the interior gaps of buildings. Radon can enter the respiratory system and cause radiation hazards. Recently research has identified Radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking. The indoor concentration of Radon progeny is mentioned as an important issue reg...
متن کاملThe feasibility of using microstrip gas detector as radon detector for earthquake prediction
In the last decade, several studies have concluded that elevated concentrations of radon gas in soil or groundwater could be the sign of an imminent earthquake. It is believed that in case of sudden movement of rocks before earthquake, radon is released from the depth of ground and reached the surface. In this way, by measuring Radon concentration change, earthquake prediction is possible. In t...

Radon is one of the most important radioactive gases.Radon emits alpha particles and ultimately,it can cause genetic disorders. There are many reports of carcinogenesis and its harmful effects. One way to get this gas into the body is by eating and drinking. In the meantime, milk is one of the most consuming foods that can be contaminated with radon. In this study, the concentration of radon gas was...
